Have you ever wondered what White Feminism is? Are you vaguely familiar with the term, but still unclear on what it actually means – and how it affects you?
Women scientists made up 25% of the Pluto fly-by New Horizon team. Make sure you share this, because erasing women’s achievements in science and history is a tradition. Happens every day.
The idea is simple: Since men’s nipples are allowed, women can Photoshop men’s nipples over their own, which should make their topless pics technically acceptable. Hopefully this riles some feathers at Instagram, whose rules are bafflingly arbitrary at times.
And here’s the other thing: Serena has dominated the world of tennis for two generations against a backdrop of racist, sexist rhetoric and commentary from sports fans, sports media, and the general pop culture world at large. Her body is sexualized and scrutinized more than any other athlete in the modern sports world (as is almost always the case with black women). Her powerful presence is interpreted through a dehumanizing racist lens. Serena is chastised, mocked, and derided for things we celebrate and honor about John McEnroe (on-court intensity), Andre Agassi (off-court branding), Boris Becker (aggression), Roger Federer (arrogance), and on and on.
She has done it longer and better than any active athlete in America. She has done it all by herself. She has done it right in the middle of a perfect storm of misogyny and racism. And she is showing no signs of slowing down.
Serena Williams won a Wimbledon title again this morning. Serena Williams is the greatest athlete in America.
Female students at a school in Staffordshire, England, were recently banned from wearing skirts because “they are distracting to male teachers and other pupils.” Trentham High School students in such “inappropriate” attire will be sent home if they don’t wear “business-like trousers.” Students haven’t protested the rule yet, but if they do, they’ll have plenty of examples to follow.
The Women’s World Cup got underway over the weekend and while
excitement was high after host country Canada’s thrilling win over China
in stoppage time, the start of play has renewed frustrations over the
controversial decision to force the women to play on artificial turf in
all six venues.
“For women, getting angry is socially unacceptable, even when the anger is over violence, discrimination, misogyny, and other forms of oppression. Anger is unacceptable because angry women are women in touch with their passion and power, especially in relation to men, which threatens the entire patriarchal order. It’s unacceptable because it forces men to confront the reality of male privilege and women’s oppression and their involvement in it, even if only as passive beneficiaries. Women’s anger challenges men to acknowledge attempts to trivialize oppression with “I was only kidding.” And women’s anger is unacceptable to men who look to women to take care of them, to prop up their need to feel in control, and to support them in their competition with other men. When women are less than gracious and good-humored about their own oppression, men often feel uncomfortable, embarrassed, at a loss, and therefore vulnerable.”
And maybe this is where the whole, “You must be on your period.” dismissal comes from. Women, justifiably angry about something, use their period as a way of retractio when the man become upset or defensive.
“Consensual sex” is just sex. To say that implies that there is such a thing as “non consensual sex”, which there isn’t. That’s rape. That is what it needs to be called. There is only sex or rape. Do not teach people that rape is just another type of sex. They are two very separate events. You wouldn’t say “breathing swimming” and “non breathing swimming”, you say swimming and drowning.
