Hello friends, this trans day of visibility take a sec to signal boost the fundraiser to defend Blake Brockington’s will and to share why it is so very very very important to remember trans people as they REALLY were, not as who their cis parents/family/friends/etc wished they could be, by using #RememberMeForME
since it is trans day of visibility, we should do more than just post selfies (and essentially copy blackout). today i will try to be posting resources, history, and transition stories. there’s nothing wrong with posting some selfies today, but please don’t make that the only thing we do today— this is a very important day, and is more than just selfies. blackout was a celebration of beauty our society often deems unworthy; trans day of visibility should be about making our community, history, and siblings known.
a small list of resources for the moment:
- trans people who are in a serious situation, such as being suicidal, or being abused, etc. can contact the trevor project. they have a lifeline that is 1-866-488-7386 and an online chat room.
- the trans 100 is a list provided by GLAAD of inspiring trans americans.
- we happy trans is a website that provides happy trans stories!
- a longer list of resources from GLAAD can be found here
- trans housing network
- mermaids.org.uk is a website that provides individual and family support for young people with differing gender identities.
- trans law center (TLC)
- Trans Youth Family Allies
- gender justice league ( specifically for advocating for gender equality within the LGBT+ community)
i will try to have more soon!! including stuff to good places to get things like binders and breast foams, clothes, make up, etc.
How did Jamie Foxx and the iHeartRadio Music Awards think this transphobic Bruce Jenner joke was OK? Especially considering what Jenner has (and has not) addressed publicly, it was just wrong and hurtful on several levels.
The Myth of the Extraordinary Woman doesn’t challenge sexism. Having one female character in a group of male characters who deserves to be there because she “earned their respect” by “being the best” does NOTHING to threaten the patriarchy, because it’ll just isolate her as an aberrant case. MOST women are useless, but THIS ONE is special.
You know what does threaten the patriarchy? Communities of women. Older female mentors taking younger ones under their wing. Presenting a united front to sexism. Women who don’t even WANT to join the boy’s club, who seek the approval of other women, and value THEIR opinions over gatekeeping sexists.
The problem:
It’s the theatre world’s open secret: queer women are noticeably absent from American stages. Despite break-out hits like this season’s Bright Half Life and the Pulitzer nominee Fun Home, representation in the theatre for queer women lags dramatically behind…
Conner Mertens on coming out as bisexual in the often hyper-masculine world of football, and on LGBT youth representation in athletics. Keep fighting the good fight, Conner!
i love conner so much
#Every28Hours (1/23/15): Another young Black man has been extrajudicially killed by the police in St Louis. For all the stories I’ve seen of crazed gunman, armed-robbers, and murderers who are taken into custody, why does it seem like the only time cops forget how to use non-lethal force is with a Black kid. #staywoke #farfromover
