PHOENIX — The facts surrounding Rumain Brisbon’s death — the ones that could be agreed upon as of Wednesday evening — follow a narrative familiar to a nation still reeling from the racially charged police incidents in Ferguson, Mo., New York City and elsewhere.
In Phoenix on Tuesday evening, a white police officer who was feeling threatened used lethal force on an unarmed black man. The incident left the officer unharmed and Brisbon, 34, dead with two bullet wounds in his torso at a north Phoenix apartment complex.
Phoenix police quickly released a detailed account of the killing for the media on Wednesday morning in what officials said was an effort to promote transparency, especially in light of the unrest that has played out in Ferguson and New York City following the deaths of unarmed Black men at the hands of White officers. But portions of that account have already been challenged by some witnesses and community activists who say that the officer’s use of force was excessive and that Brisbon’s death was unwarranted.
Shortly before 6 p.m. on Tuesday, officers were in the area of Interstate 17 and Greenway Road for a burglary investigation when a resident of an apartment complex told them that men inside a black Cadillac SUV were engaged in a drug deal, said Sgt. Trent Crump, a Phoenix police spokesman.

Grand jury doesn’t indict NYPD officer accused in illegal chokehold death - reports
A New York City grand jury has decided not to indict the New York Police Department officer accused of killing a Staten Island man by putting him in an illegal chokehold. The NYPD is now preparing for more protests stemming from the decision.
Both the New York Post newspaper and the city’s NY1 media outlet reported shortly after 2 p.m. on Wednesday that a grand jury declined to indict Daniel Pantaleo in the death of Eric Garner.

Obama Wants $75 Million to Outfit 50,000 Police Officers With Body Cameras
The crisis born of Officer Darren Wilson’s non-indictment in Ferguson, Missouri, last week has compelled the White House to push for national police reform.
President Barack Obama called for Monday $75 million to equip 50,000 police officers across the nation with body cameras intended to track their interactions with civilians.
The budget for the body cameras, announced during a day of meetings with civil rights leaders and members of law enforcement, is part of a three-year, $263 million initiative on police reform that would also expand training for law enforcement, according to the Associated Press.
Obama plans on working with Congress next year to include the program in the 2015 budget.

feminist (2014); when you spend so much time with the folks here at tumblr dot com, i think you kind of forget that in the real world, feminism is still regarded as extreme and has this weird bad connotation to it. we talk about classic feminist literature in my lectures and i’m shocked by how many people disagree with feminist ideals. every single person in my life has this internalized misogyny that they aren’t even aware of. that’s why, for my final photography project, i decided to cover feminism. i utilized an institutional-type wall and two simple continuous profoto lights to create a man-on-the-street vibe and recruited some of the most passionate feminists i know to pose with signs. it’s a simple idea for those of us who are so passionate about feminism, but i’m hoping it will help open the eyes of my classmates who never give these ideas a second thought.
Femme to Femme is a literary non-fiction, varied anthology seeking to explore femme* identity in the 21st century through various mediums: poetry, essays, stories and narratives, illustration, art and photography. It was inspired by conversation with young femme* folks of color and Joseph Beam’s 1991 collection of writings edited by Essex Hemphill: Brother to Brother: New Writings by Black Gay Men.

We’re specifically seeking stories, letters, narratives, critical analyses and essays, illustrations, and photography capturing the essence and nuanced expressions of black and brown femme* personhood across gendered and embodied difference and lived experiences; How you interpret these is up to you. Officers who shot 12-year-old Tamir Rice holding a toy gun refused to give him first aid
November 28, 2014The Cleveland officers who shot a 12-year-old boy holding a toy gun then failed to give him first aid for nearly four minutes. The boy was finally administered first aid when a detective and FBI agent arrived at the scene.
But it was too late. The boy, Tamir Rice, died after being transported to the hospital.
According to newly surveillance video, Rice was shot by the officers within two seconds of their arrival at the scene.
A department spokesman told a local ABC station he “was unsure of the policy related to how and when officers are required to provide medical assistance.” The officers’ conduct is “under investigation.”
The officers believed that the 12-year-old Rice was a “black male” who appeared “about 20.”
The family is outspoken in their belief that their son’s death was avoidable, had the police officers acted appropriately. The U.S. Justice Department has an ongoing investigation into the Cleveland Police “over allegations of excessive and unreasonable deadly force.”

Jalisco, November 26thElements of the Fuerza Única, Jalisco, detained students of the Escuela Normal Rural de Atequiza as they headed towards the town of La Barca, Jalisco. Right now they are surrounded by nine patrols and they’re demanding them to get off the bus.
“This is getting bad, they already drew their weapons and there is an element that is very aggressive. One of the students asked them if they were like the cops of Iguala, who disappear students, and the police responded, ‘Yes, we are like that’, and that is a direct threat,” says one of the students through his phone.
The normalista, who requested anonymity, said they were going from Atequiza to La Barca to pick up some comrades who had participated in a demonstration with farmers (a protest to put pressure on the goverment for the recent events regarding Ayotzinapa, and the way they neglect resources to their rural schools), but before reaching Ocotlán, a van blocked their way in the highroad.
"They stopped us, got us off the truck and a chubby police started pushing us, threatening us, all while swearing at us. We asked him why they were detaining us if we did nothing illegal.” He further added that they have them surrounded while pointing at them with guns and flashlights.

A friend of mine told me they already took 8 girls with them, and that there’s already a bunch of riot elements surrounding the school AND the manifestants of La Barca.
It is worth mentioning that the students of Atequiza belong to the same Student Federation as the missing students from Ayotzinapa. Also, the Fuerza Única Police are elements that just love hiding their badges and getting involved in corruption cases.
This is real, and this is happening right now. The goverment is going after every single rural school and won’t stop until they shut them down, like they’ve been doing since the last century. Around the 30’s, there were 36 Escuelas Rurales Normales, nowadays, there’s only 16.
