malala yousufzai, recent recipient of this year’s nobel peace prize, was shot in the head two years ago by the tehreek-e-taliban pakistan (ttp) on her way home from school in pakistan’s picturesque northern swat valley, where the pakistani army has long been battling a now resurgent ttp.

though the pakistani army arrested ten men this september for her attack, the ttp are still threatening to kill malala should she return home from britain, where she sought treatment for her injuries and now goes to school and continues her campaign for the right of all children to an education. (in pakistan, 57 millions children do not go to school.)

and while many in pakistan take pride in her recognition from the nobel committee and take inspiration from her struggle (as seen in the first photo from a rally for the muttahida quami movement), many others — including middle class university students — wonder whether the shooting was staged to create a hero for the west to embrace, or to shift focus from american drone strikes.

but in malala’s old school, fear of the ttp has forced her name and image to be removed from the grounds. “we have had threats. it is much more dangerous for us after malala’s shooting and all the attention that she is getting,” said the school’s principal. “the taliban are very dangerous. we all have fear in our hearts.”

undaunted, some girls, pictured here at school in the swat valley (where the ttp has destroyed over 400 schools) and on the outskirts of islamabad, continue to pursue an education, many in make shift schools which they must dash in to, heads covered and faces obscured.

Ginsburg Was Right: Texas’ Extreme Voter ID Law Is Stopping People From Voting

huffpostpolitics:

A Texas voter ID law considered to be one of the most restrictive in the country is doing exactly what Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg warned it would do: stopping Americans from voting.

Something remarkable happened this fall when TV got more diverse

In the lead-up to network TV’s fall 2014 season, outlets buzzed with news of how racially diverse the new slate of shows would be. ABC led the charge, with a weeknight lineup featuring Black-ish, Cristela, Fresh Off the Boat and How to Get Away With Murder — all boasting minority leads and plotlines built around questions of identity.

“You’re going to see shows reflecting the already-changed face of America,” ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee told an audience of journalists and advertisers in May.

As it turns out, these programs did more than just bolster their networks’ public relations. Follow micdotcom

50,000 Mexicans take to the streets to fight back against dangerous corruption

Last month, 43 student teachers went missing in the small town of Iguala in the state of Guerrero, Mexico. But what began as a story about a local tragedy has morphed into a national outcry over corruption and narcoterrorism — and one of the biggest protests that Mexico has seen in decades.

Tens of thousands have taken to the streets throughout the country, with tensions flaring as more and more news about the students’ disappearance has come out. On Wednesday alone, 50,000 people marched through Mexico City and rioted in the city of Chilpancingo, the capital of Guerrero, setting fire to government buildings and ransacking supermarkets and shopping centers.

How government corruption led to the disappearance

““If Marvel makes Thor 3 [as its first 2017 release], it will have made ten movies headlined by blond white men named Chris before it makes one movie headlined by someone who isn’t even white.” While not besmirching the talent or integrity of Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pratt, that’s taking lack of diversity to admirably comic levels.””

Modern Jim Crow laws exist — and they’re targeting completely innocent minority voters

Jim Crow laws are back.

At least according to civil rights giant Rev. Joseph Lowery, as reported by Al Jazeera America, which released a new investigation Wednesday into a wave of injustices behind a huge program meant to fight voter fraud. Instead, that’s effectively ended up targeting minority voters whose only “crime” is sharing a first and last name.

It’s called the Interstate Crosscheck program, a list of nearly 7 million names examined to find people who are theoretically voting twice across states. The list is used in 27 states, mostly by Republican officials, to identify fraud and potentially take voters off the rolls.

The problem is easily solvable

Thousands of Hungarians take to the streets to fight for Internet freedom

Tens of thousands of Hungarians marched Tuesday in Budapest to protest the government’s plan to tax Internet use. The government claims the tax will help reduce the country’s debt, but many Hungarians just see it as an effort to restrict their freedom of speech and expression.
